Hooray for Bollywood

On June 20th the Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) will present my new full-length, Bollywood-themed dance concert at Harmony Hall. The term ”Bollywood” refers to India’s enormous Hindi-language film industry that is located in Bombay (now known as ”Mumbai.”) Although Bollywood choreographies originally drew from Indian classical and folk dance, other genres like jazz, hip hop, and even belly dance have recently entered the mix. Bollywood movies have an innocent optimism, an infectious charm, and an unabashed sense of melodrama that paints the world in bright colors — just like the old Hollywood musicals of the Depression years.

An Evening on the Silk Road

Silk Road Dance Company's performance at the National Theatre in Washington DC

What do you get when you combine a whimsical night of dance with vivid customs made of delicate silks? That would be a night of dance performances by the Silk Road Dance Company.....

The performances were unique in their dance style and music accompaniments. I was enthralled with the beautiful gowns and dresses that the dancers wore (which were designed by Dr. Gray), as well as their fluid movements. Dr. Gray has ensured authenticity in the performances and dress attire. In fact, the dance company has performed in various venues like universities and embassies. If you would like to have a worldly experience make sure you check out their events on www.silkroaddance.com.

Legends of the Silk Road

The Publick Playhouse presented award-winning choreographer Laurel Victoria Gray and Silk Road Dance Company in the premiere of a new concert, Legends of the Silk Road, on November 8, 2008.

The evening program brought to life the myths, legends and history of Central Asia, celebrating 3,000 years of women
rulers, deities, warriors, martyrs and lovers. From fierce Amazons to the
heroic Queen Esther, from a Mesopotamian goddess to celestial Buddhist maidens, the ensemble presented an enchanted evening of mystical adventure. Highlighted by breathtaking costumes and compelling music, the concert included rare dances of Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and the Caucasus Mountains.

Silk Road Dance Company

Since its inception in 1995, Laurel Victoria Gray’s Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) has delighted audiences around the country with traditional and fusion dances from the Middle East and Central Asia. Performing Uzbek, Afghani, Tadjik, Azerbaijani, Kurdish, Persian, and Egyptian dance techniques rarely seen in the United States, their performances offer a unique glimpse of the life, culture, and art of little known regions.

The ensemble takes its name from the term Silk Road, an evocative name coined by the 19th-century German scholar, Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen, to describe the network of caravan routes that linked China with the Mediterranean. Our repertoire celebrates the delightful dance traditions and sumptuous costumes of cultures along this fabled trade route — the Great Silk Road.

Nationally they have performed at Warner Brothers Studios (Hollywood, CA), Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, North Carolina State University, Ford Amphitheatre (Hollywood, CA), the Rakkasah Middle Eastern Dance Festival (Somerset, NJ), Manhattan Center (New York, NY) and The Field Museum in Chicago. SRDC has also performed in some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in D.C.,including the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the Embassies of Uzbekistan, Russia, Egypt and Turkey, the State Department, the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, National Geographic Society, the National Press Club, the Secret Service, the Washington Monument, Library of Congress and the M ...More
